If you can’t find a reason not to do it, don’t do it

Quick rule of thumb: Before making major life decisions, from moving house to changing jobs, to dealing with trouble in relationships or having surgery, there is one question you should seriously ask yourself.

What is a very very good reason not to do this?

This question, I assure you, will help you find your blind spots. Because if you can’t find any reason not to do something, then you probably haven’t thought things through yet.

Now I know, mainstream advice would be not to overthink things. The mob will shout at you that you’ll only cause hesitation by thinking too much. Inertia is the modern sin. Thou shalt get a move on! But I’m not so sure if there is such at thing as too much thinking, when the brain is healthy that is. There is a minimum amount of thinking you should do in life, because your brain is your primary means of survival. The question above should help you figure out if you’ve thought enough. You should be able to name at least one serious reason not to go through with the change you are about to make. Because in life, there are no solutions. There are only trade-offs. No decision you make will be completely free from some sort of payment down the line. Thinking about the potential payments, will help you decide which price you are willing to pay.
